TOP 10 MOVIES TO BINGE WATCH THIS BREAK

Ran out of things to binge watch this break? Don't worry, we got you covered here at Annyeong Tomasino! Here's a list of horror and thriller films we personally hand-picked and recommended that you can enjoy with your friends, family, or alone!

1. Dogani/The Silenced (2011)

This is not a horror film, but what's probably horrifying is that Dogani is based on a series of actual events that happened to a school in Gwangju. Revolving around a teacher with a dark past, a school for the deaf-mute housing dark secrets and a riveting plot with an ending that will blow your mind, Dogani is one film you should definitely add to your list. With acting powerhouses Gong Yoo and Jung Yu-mi who both starred in Train to Busan and a bevy of child stars whose acting skills are a force to be reckoned with, Dogani is sure to keep you up at night not out of fear of the supernatural, but the fear of the thought that how even the nicest of humans are capable of doing the most unspeakable things.

2. The Whispering (2018)

What's one sure way to get yourself killed in a horror movie? Enter an abandoned place despite numerous warnings for the sake of live streaming and achieving Internet infamy. Choi Sang-Hoon's directorial debut features a group of teens who just finished their college exams chancing upon a deserted amusement park and doing a live stream for the money and fame. Whispering is your typical teen horror flick with a straightforward premise of teens doing dumb decisions and suffering the consequences for it, The Whispering's jump scares and horror pacing is noteworthy enough to make it to this list, and a recommended movie to watch with your friends.

3. Gonijiam: Haunted Asylum (2018)

There's nothing scarier than found footage horror films, especially when the film is based on actual events. Try looking up Gonijiam Psychiatric Hospital on Google and you'll probably end up at the deep web. Directed by Jung Bum Shik, Gonijiam, much like The Whispering, centers around the premise of a group of youth planning to livestream their experience in one of South Korea's most haunted places, the abandoned Gonijam Psychiatric hospital in Gwangju, Gyeonggi province. Gonijiam is one of those films that doesn't heavily rely on jump scares to become scary. With perfect pacing, sinister elements of ambiguity and the unknown, Gonijiam will surely leave you hanging at the edge of your seat. Take it from us here at Annyeong Tomasino, do NOT watch this alone.

4. A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)

Of course we we wouldn’t miss a cult classic such as this on the list, this is something you should rewatch a million times to truly appreciate it. This psychological horror film centers around Two sisters who, after spending time in a mental institution, return to the home of their father and cruel stepmother. Once there, in addition to dealing with their stepmother's obsessive and unbalanced ways, an interfering ghost also affects their recovery. With a remarkable plot, good pacing and a plot twist that will blow your mind, A Tale of Two Sisters will intrigue you from the start and rouse your curiosity until the end.

5. Seoul Station (2016)

Were any of you even aware Train to Busan had a prequel? Seoul Station is an animated film written and directed by the same director of Train to Busan and features the events before the fated film. Centering around Suk-Gyu, a father searching for his runaway daughter Hye-Sun, and as they are about to be reunited, the zombie epidemic breaks out in Seoul. With a good pacing, stunning visuals for an animated film and a plot twist and ending that will leave you screaming for more, definitely add Seoul Station to your list of films, and we highly recommend this to watch with your friends, it makes it more fun.

6. Death Bell (2008)

With enough twists and turns to keep you entertained and shocking revelations, Death Bell is certainly one to recommend. Twenty of the most elite students at a Korean High School are picked off one by one by an unknown assailant. With the rest of them trapped in school and unable to leave the premises, they have to solve various questions or another student will die a horrible death. With stunning visuals, gory death scenes, and the plot's twisted irony will imprint in your mind. Death Bell's twist and turns and last minute revelations is enough to send chills down your spine. Definitely something we recommend to watch over the break.

7. The Red Shoes (2005)

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the same name, The Red Shoes is something short of a fairytale. Starring Kim Hye-Soo (Signal, Tazza: The High Rollers) along with actors Kim Sung-Soo and Kang Ye-won, The Red Shoes' plot, striking cinematography and sold yet stylish gore scenes is good enough to keep you at the edge of your seats, dying to know how this film will end. If you're looking for a good horror flick, The Red Shoes is probably the best addition for your horror collection.

8. Manhole (2014)

Serial killers are major problems as they are, but good-looking serial killers spell bigger trouble. Starring Jung Kyung-Ho (Missing Nine, Life on Mars) along with Korean thriller movie queen Jung Yu-Mi (Dogani, Train to Busan, Reply 1994) and Kim Sae-Ron (The Queen's Classroom, Hi! School: Love on), Manhole will probably leave you with serious trust issues on manholes. Centering around two sisters, one gets targeted by a serial killer who uses manholes to trap his victims. It's up to the older sister to rescue her younger sister, in this desperate race against time and a manic serial killer that will leave to more discoveries neither she nor the audience will expect. If you're looking for a thriller film that will fill your veins with adrenaline and have you tearing your hair out from the stress, definitely add this film to your list.

9. The Flu (2013)

If you enjoyed Train to Busan (Who didn't anyway?), you'll definitely enjoy The Flu as well. The Flu will leave you with questions of how far you would go to save your loved ones, and the such debatable question of would you rather save your loved one over the lives of countless more, The Flu will surely not disappoint, not with an acting line-up headed by Jang Hyuk (Fated to Love You, Voice) and Soo Ae (Queen of Ambition, Mask), and cinematography by Lee Mo-gae (I Saw the Devil, A Tale of Two Sisters).

Also watch out for Filipino actor Lester Avan Andrada on this one!

10. Midnight FM (2010)

Another film starring So Ae and earned her the Best Actress award for the 31st Blue Dragon Film Awards, Midnight FM is a nerve-wracking cat-mouse thriller featuring a TV anchorwoman who suddenly receives a message from an anonymous man who has taken her family hostage. She must follow his demands lest her family will be killed. Midnight FM may have a typical premise but with such good build up and maintenance of tension throughout the film, Midnight FM is filled with surprises, thrills and violent scenes that will have you craving for more.

SPECIAL MENTION:

11. Deranged (2012)

Okay, we said we’re only featuring ten films but this film. We lied, but only because this film is just too good to mention. As far as disaster films go, Deranged is not your typical disaster film, as this film was such a huge hit in the Korean audience, we're sure you'll enjoy this film too. When a strain of mutated horsehair worms begin to plague Seoul, it's up to former biochemist professor Jae-hyuk and his brother Jae-pil to save Jae-hyuk's family when they themselves start exhibiting symptoms of being infected. With the elements of family drama, societal chaos and government inefficiency, we highly recommend Deranged to watch with your friends and family over this break.

And that concludes our list for our movies to binge watch over the break, head on over to your preferred streaming site and enjoy these movies. Just make sure you’ll be able to sleep right after!
